Latvia: Spīgo Spīgo will represent Latvia at Eurovision Choir of the Year 2017. Spīgo is the girl’s choir of Jelgava’s 4th secondary school in Latvia and was established in 1977. Līga Celma-Kursiete has been the artistic director of the choir since 2004. The choir won the Latvian School Youth Song Festival Grand Prix in 1995, 2005, 2010 and 2015. The choir gained first place in the 2008 XXIV and 2013 XXV National Song Festival choir wars in the women’s choir category. The choir has participated in and won international choir competitions in Torrevieja, Tampere, Vienna, Venice, Cracow, Olomouc, Riga World Choir Games. About Līga Celma-Kursiete Līga Celma-Kursiete received her BA degree in music pedagogy in 2000. In 2007 she completed her MA degree in composition at the Latvian Academy of music with Prof. P. Plakidis. She has completed composition studies in The Hague and Copenhagen with Gilius van Bergeijk and Bent Sorensen. She has also received lessons in orchestra conducting with Prof. J.Zirnis. Prominent choirs such as the State Choir Latvia and the Latvian Radio Choir have sung Līga’s compositions. Since 2004 she has been the artistic director at the girls’ choir, Spīgo. The choir has received many awards in Latvia and abroad, including the Grand Prix three times in a row at the Youth Song festival of Latvia in 2005, 2010 and 2015.
