Eurovision Choir of the Year is coming to Riga, the city with a story for everyone

Latvia’s vibrant capital is playing host to the first ever Eurovision Choir of the Year competition on 22 July. Choirs from Austria (Hardchor Linz), Belgium (Les Pastoreaux), Denmark (Academic Choir of Aarhus), Estonia (Estonian TV Girls’ Choir), Germany (Jazzchor Freiburg), Latvia (Spīgo), Slovenia (Carmen Manet), Hungary (Bela Bartok Male Choir) and Wales will take part in the event, which features a prominent international jury including composer John Rutter (UK) and internationally renowned mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča.

Eurovision Choir of the Year will be hosted in English by composer Eric Whitacre (USA) and Eva Johansone (Latvia). The competition will take place within the popular international competition European Choir Games, organised by German-based INTERKULTUR, the world’s leading organiser of international choir competitions and festivals in collaboration with LIVE RIGA.

Rendezvous in Riga

Riga is the perfect location for Eurovision Choir of the Year and offers dynamic cultural life. The Latvian National Opera gathers world-level artists, concert halls regularly offer classic and popular music concerts whilst exhibition halls present works of world-known classical and contemporary artists.

The architecture of Riga is diverse and includes Gothic churches which are more than 800 years old, built by the founders of Riga. The medieval buildings in the Old Town, exquisite Art Nouveau, as well as the city’s wooden buildings make Riga a true pearl of architecture. Let the European Choir Games commence!

From 16-23 July, more than 150 choirs will compete in Riga as part of the European Choir Games in 10 different categories, the culmination of the events will be the first ever Eurovision Choir of the Year competition. There will also be friendship concerts taking place at outdoor stages across the city, including the introduction concert of Latvian Song and Dance Celebration, Pa zvaigžņu ceļu. A Parade of Nations will also take place in the city in addition to concerts at the Riga Dome Cathedral.
